# Snapping and precision

Use object snaps and tracking to place geometry accurately, and adjust the snapping controls for the task.

Use snapping to align points with existing geometry, and press **F3** to toggle snapping while working on the canvas.

## Choose object snaps

Open **Snap Settings** from the magnet control. The **Snapping** switch controls whether snapping is enabled; **Object Snaps** lets you choose the kinds of targets to use.

Supported target kinds include endpoints, midpoints, centres, wall nodes, intersections, perpendicular and tangent relationships, nearest points, parallel relationships and extensions. The useful targets depend on the geometry and the operation in progress.

Enable the target kinds you need for the current task.

## Use tracking and orthogonal drawing

In **Snap Settings**, the **Tracking** controls include:

* **Polar Tracking** for orthogonal tracking directions.
* **Ortho Mode** to force horizontal or vertical drawing; holding **Shift** inverts it while held.
* **Object Tracking** for extension relationships from reference points.

Tracking is not the same as a typed dimension. Use an exact numeric input when a particular length or angle is required.

## Draw to an exact length or angle

For an exact line:

1. Press **L** and click its start point.
2. Enter **L** for length in the displayed unit, **A** for angle in degrees, or both.
3. Press **Enter** to place the endpoint and finish the line.

For a rectangle, fill both **W** and **H** before pressing **Enter**. For a polyline or wall, confirming a value places one point; finish the run separately. See [Draw to exact lengths and angles](/drafting/draw-to-exact-lengths-and-angles.md) for the tool-by-tool guide.

## What you'll see

Markers and guide lines identify the snap or tracking relationship near the pointer. Inspect that relationship before placing the point, especially where several edges meet.

## Troubleshooting

**The pointer snaps to an unwanted target.** Turn off that target kind in **Snap Settings**, or press **F3** to temporarily disable snapping.

**The expected point is not caught.** Check the master **Snapping** switch and whether that target kind is enabled. Move close enough to the intended geometry and inspect the preview.

**A line remains horizontal or vertical.** Check **Ortho Mode** and whether **Shift** is held.

**You need a precise value rather than a nearby target.** Use the drawing tool's numeric input and check the resulting geometry.
