# Rotate, resize and modify geometry

Rotate, scale, mirror, offset, trim or extend existing drawing geometry with a short guide for each task.

Choose the change you need. These tools modify existing geometry; [drawing inputs](/drafting/draw-to-exact-lengths-and-angles.md) set values while creating new geometry.

| I want to… | Use |
| ----------------------------------- | ----------------- |
| Turn selected content | [Rotate](#rotate) |
| Enlarge or reduce content | [Scale](#scale) |
| Reflect content across an axis | [Mirror](#mirror) |
| Create a parallel path | [Offset](#offset) |
| Remove part of intersecting paths | [Trim](#trim) |
| Lengthen an open path to a boundary | [Extend](#extend) |

You need editing access. For a wall's construction thickness or an opening's width, use that item's properties instead of scaling a whole drawing.

## Rotate

1. Press **V**, select the content, then press **Q** for Rotate.
2. Click the rotation centre.
3. Click a reference point to establish the starting direction.
4. Move the pointer and click to set the rotation, or enter a rotation in **A** and press **Enter**.

The selected content turns around the centre you chose. A typed angle is the amount of rotation; inspect the preview before confirming.

## Scale

1. Select the content and press **S** for Scale.
2. Click the base point.
3. Click a second point to establish the source length.
4. Click to set the target length, or type the target length in **L** and press **Enter**.

The source and target lengths determine the scale. **L** is a length in the displayed unit, not a percentage. Check a known measurement afterwards, especially when correcting an imported drawing.

## Mirror

1. Select the content and press **Shift+M** for Mirror.
2. Choose **Mirror and keep original** for a reflected copy, or **Mirror and delete original** to replace the original.
3. Click the first point on the mirror axis.
4. Move the pointer to preview the reflection, then click the second point on the axis.

Inspect the mirrored result and whether the original remains. The axis is defined by your two clicks.

## Offset

1. Press **Shift+O**, select one line, polyline, rectangle, circle or arc, and press **Enter**. If it was already selected, the tool goes straight to the distance step.
2. Click two points to define the offset distance, or enter **Distance** and press **Enter** when that field is shown.
3. Choose the side of the source path and click to place the offset.

Offset works on a single continuous path made of straight or arc segments. Walls, groups, multiple selections, gaps and Bézier curves cannot be offset. Curved paths stretched unequally in different directions are also excluded. Inspect the preview at corners and in narrow areas before placing it.

## Trim

1. Press **Shift+T** and select the intersecting paths involved.
2. Press **Enter** to confirm the selection.
3. Click the segments you want to remove.
4. Press **Enter** or **Space** when done.

Check which segment will be removed before clicking. **Esc** exits the tool; use **Undo** to reverse a trim that has already changed the drawing.

## Extend

1. Press **Shift+E** and select the boundary shapes.
2. Press **Enter** to confirm the boundaries.
3. Click, or brush over, an open path to extend it towards the boundary.
4. Press **Esc** when finished.

Use an open path and inspect the end you are extending. If nothing changes, check that the intended boundary and path can meet in the extension direction.

## Recover and check

Use **Cmd/Ctrl+Z** to undo a completed change. Check nearby connections, openings and annotations after a geometry change. Dimensions and leaders need separate review because they do not automatically follow moved geometry.

## Next step

[Measure distance and area](/drafting/measure-distance-and-area.md) to check your result.
