# Turn a scan into an editable drawing

Trace a scanned plan, compare the reconstruction with its source, and correct it before developing the drawing.

Trace the useful plan regions in your scan, then compare and correct the reconstructed drawing before relying on it.

## Before you start

Choose a legible image or PDF with visible walls and openings. Decide which plans you need if a page contains several drawings. The tracing workflow accepts files up to the displayed 50 MB limit.

Have a known dimension available for checking the result. The trace review does not calibrate the drawing from a distance you enter.

## Steps

### Import the scan

Follow [Trace a floor plan](/ai-and-automation/trace-a-floor-plan.md) to upload the source and open the detected-plan review.

### Choose the regions

Inspect every page and remove unwanted regions. **Trace All Floorplans** processes all retained regions, not only the highlighted one.

### Run the trace

Start the trace after checking the scope and [credit requirements](/workspace-and-billing/understand-ai-credits.md).

### Compare with the source

Compare the editable result with its reference image. Check the outer footprint, wall connections, doors, windows, room labels and detected furniture.

### Verify dimensions

Use [Measure](/drafting/measure-distance-and-area.md) to check a known distance and room sizes. Then [move content](/drafting/select-move-and-duplicate-shapes.md) or correct a [wall](/drafting/draw-a-wall.md#correct-an-existing-wall) or [opening](/drafting/add-a-door-or-window.md#correct-an-opening). Check junctions and dimensions after each change.

## What you'll see

The result contains editable drawing elements and a cropped reference image. You can develop the drawing with the same tools as manually drawn geometry.

## When tracing is not the right route

If you only need a visual reference, choose **Keep as image** rather than tracing. If no plan is detected, try a clearer or tighter source image, or retain it as a reference for manual drawing.
