# Trace a floor plan

Turn a floor-plan image or PDF into editable drawing elements, after reviewing the regions you want to trace.

Upload a floor-plan image or PDF, review the detected regions, and trace them into editable drawing elements.

## Before you start

Use a legible plan with clearly visible walls and openings. JPEG, PNG, GIF, WebP and PDF are supported inputs for this workflow; SVG is not a tracing input. The upload limit is shown as **50 MB**.

Tracing is different from importing a reference image: a reference remains a picture, while tracing reconstructs a drawing you can edit. Check your [AI credit requirements](/workspace-and-billing/understand-ai-credits.md), especially when a file contains several plans.

## Review the trace scope

The final **Trace All Floorplans** button includes **all retained regions across the review's pages**, not only the region currently highlighted. Highlighting a plan lets you inspect it; it does not limit the final operation to that plan.

Remove regions you do not want before starting. In the review, you can adjust, add and delete regions. A separate trace may be charged for each plan, so review the full file rather than only the first page.

## Steps

### Import the source

Bring the plan image or PDF into your project by dropping the file onto the canvas. If the PDF chooser appears, choose **Trace** and click **Import** to continue into the floor-plan workflow.

### Choose tracing

When detected floor plans are offered, choose **Trace** or **Trace all**. Choose **Keep as image** instead if you want a reference without tracing.

### Review the regions

In **Import a floorplan**, inspect the page and the highlighted regions. Adjust the region bounds so they cover the plans you intend to trace.

### Check every page

Review every page of a multipage file. Remove unwanted regions before continuing.

### Start the trace

Click **Trace Floorplan** or **Trace All Floorplans** to start, and wait for the result.

## What you'll see

The trace places editable drawing elements and a cropped reference image on the canvas. Recognised walls, openings, rooms and furnishings can be inspected and adjusted with the drawing tools.

## Check scale and dimensions

Keep the cropped reference beside the drawing while you check it:

1. Use [Measure](/drafting/measure-distance-and-area.md) to compare a known distance and important room sizes.
2. Check the footprint, wall junctions, doors, windows and room labels against the source.
3. Correct missed or misplaced content with the [drawing tools](/drafting.md).

The trace review does not calibrate from a distance you enter. If the whole drawing is the wrong size, use [Scale](/drafting/rotate-resize-and-modify-geometry.md#scale) and measure again.

## Troubleshooting

**No floor plan is detected.** The upload may remain an image without opening the review. Try a clearer or more tightly cropped plan image, or keep it as a reference and draw over it.

**A page contains more than one plan.** Check each region and remove duplicates or unwanted details. The final trace can include regions on other pages too.

**Only part of a plan is reconstructed.** Compare the region bounds and source image. Adjust the region to include the missing area before tracing again, or correct the drawing manually. Check the cost before another trace.

**The progress indicator is still running.** Wait for a completion or error message.
