# Select objects and surfaces with segmentation

Use Segment to select detected objects and surfaces in an image, then choose a focused editing action.

Select an image and choose **Segment** to detect objects and surfaces you can target for image edits.

## When to use it

Segmentation is useful when you want to change a floor finish, repaint a surface, replace an object or remove part of a scene without starting with a whole-image instruction.

Detected regions are parts of the image. Editing them leaves the drawing unchanged. Detection and each subsequent edit are separate AI operations; check their costs before running them.

## Steps

1. Press **V** for **Select** and select one image.
2. Click **Segment** and wait for detection to finish.
3. Move the pointer over the image to inspect the highlighted regions and their labels.
4. Click the object or surface you want to change.
5. Choose one of the actions offered for that selection.

## What you'll see

The selected region is highlighted and its editing actions appear. Choosing a region leaves the image unchanged until you run an editing action.

## Choose an action

| Detected content | Typical available actions |
| --------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Paintable surface | **Change paint**, **Add/Change wallpaper** |
| Floor | **Change Flooring** |
| Cloth or solid object | **Erase**, **Isolate**, **Replace Element**, **Change Material** |
| Carpet | **Erase**, **Isolate**, **Replace Element**, **Change Pattern** |
| Wall artwork | **Erase**, **Replace Element**, **Change Art** |
| Electronic object | **Erase**, **Isolate**, **Replace Element**, **Turn On/Off** |

The offered actions depend on the detected category. An unrecognised category may offer a smaller general set. A selection combining unlike categories may not offer specialised actions such as changing paint.

**Turn On/Off** changes how a detected electronic object appears in the image, such as switching a screen or light on or off. [Watch a lamp being switched on, 20:12–20:35](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hinB0AIuISE\&t=1212s).

## Continue after an edit

After a segmentation edit, select another region to continue working on the image. Use **Re-segment** when the detection no longer matches the edited picture—for example, after replacing an object with one of a different shape.

Click outside the image to leave segmentation. **Re-segment** runs detection again; check its credit cost before starting.

## Troubleshooting

**The region is incorrect or missing.** Try a clearer source image, or use [Edit with prompt](/ai-and-automation/edit-an-image-with-a-prompt.md) if the target is not detected.

**The action you want is absent.** Select the intended surface or object alone, then check its category against the table above.

**An edit changed surrounding details.** Compare with the original and use **Cmd/Ctrl+Z** if the change is unsuitable.
