# Remove an image background

Remove an image's background and keep the result in the same place on the canvas.

Select one image and choose **Remove background** to replace it with a background-removed result.

## When to use it

Use background removal to prepare an image for a composition without its surrounding scene. If you want to pick a particular detected object and also reconstruct the scene behind it, use [Isolate](/ai-and-automation/erase-or-isolate-an-object.md) instead.

Keep a separate original before starting if you need a comparison; this action replaces the selected image.

## Steps

1. Press **V** for **Select**, then select one image.
2. Click **Remove background** in the image actions.
3. Wait for processing to finish, then inspect the result's edges and transparent areas.

## What you'll see

The image keeps its canvas size, with transparent areas where the background was removed. Inspect fine edges, gaps and reflective or transparent objects.

## Controls and limits

Background removal selects the subject automatically. To choose a particular object, use [Segment and Isolate](/ai-and-automation/erase-or-isolate-an-object.md).

**Undo** restores the previous image; **Cancel** stops the local waiting flow. Neither guarantees a credit refund. See [AI credits](/workspace-and-billing/understand-ai-credits.md#cancellation-and-undo).

## Troubleshooting

**The wrong content was retained.** Undo if needed and try a more focused source image, or select a detected region with **Segment** and use an available isolation action.

**The toolbar is missing.** Activate **Select** and select only the image, not its containing group or several items.
