# Generate a floor plan

Describe a space and generate one editable floor plan, optionally constrained by a boundary you have drawn.

Choose **Generate a floorplan**, describe your brief, and get one editable plan that you can develop with the drawing tools.

**Shortcut:** Cmd/Ctrl+K opens command search.

## Before you start

Open a project you can edit. Decide whether you want a freely arranged plan or a plan fitted to an existing boundary. Check your [AI credits](/workspace-and-billing/understand-ai-credits.md) before submitting.

Use generation for a new layout from a brief. To reproduce an existing plan image, use [Trace a floor plan](/ai-and-automation/trace-a-floor-plan.md) instead.

## Steps

1. Open command search with **Cmd/Ctrl+K**, search for **Generate a floorplan**, and choose that action.
2. Enter your brief in **Describe your floorplan…**. Include the type of space, rooms and important relationships between them.
3. Leave the boundary unset for a freely arranged plan, or choose a boundary using the instructions below.
4. Press **Enter**, or click the send control, to generate. Use **Shift+Enter** when you need a new line in the brief.

## What you'll see

A single editable floor plan appears on the canvas. Its recognised walls, rooms and openings can be selected and adjusted with the drawing tools. Furnishings may also be placed where recognised.

## Generate inside a boundary

To give floor-plan generation an existing outline:

1. Draw a closed rectangle or polyline with an area **larger than 20 m²**.
2. Open **Generate a floorplan**.
3. Click **Pick a boundary shape**, then click the outline on the canvas.
4. Check that a **Boundary** tag names the shape you intended.
5. Enter your brief and submit.

Dismiss the boundary tag to remove the constraint. The outline must be closed and larger than 20 m².

The generated plan is independent of the boundary afterwards. Moving the boundary does not reshape the plan.

## Example brief

> A two-bedroom apartment with an open kitchen and living area, one bathroom, a separate utility room and storage near the entrance. Keep the bedrooms away from the entrance and avoid long corridors.

For a guided sequence, see [Turn a brief into an editable plan](/ai-workflows/brief-to-editable-plan.md).

## Check the plan

Compare the plan with your brief and boundary. Check room sizes, circulation, openings and the footprint, especially around recesses or irregular edges. Use [Measure](/drafting/measure-distance-and-area.md) to verify dimensions, then correct the drawing as needed.

Generation provides a starting layout. Check it against your project's design and regulatory requirements before delivery.

## Troubleshooting

**The boundary is rejected.** Confirm that it is a closed rectangle or polyline and exceeds 20 m². Choose a different outline if necessary.

**The result misses part of the brief.** Edit the drawing directly, or revise the brief and make a new submission. A new submission can incur another credit charge.

**Generation fails.** Read the displayed message. Resolve any access or credit requirement before retrying; a general failure does not necessarily mean your brief is invalid.
