# Change paint in an image

Select a detected paintable surface and choose a new colour without changing the underlying drawing.

Use **Segment** to select a paintable surface, then choose **Change paint** and a colour.

## Before you start

Use an interior image with a visible surface you want to recolour. Keep a separate original for comparison; the edit updates the image and leaves the drawing unchanged.

## Steps

1. Select one image and click **Segment**.
2. Wait for detection, then click the intended paintable surface and inspect its highlight.
3. Click **Change paint**.
4. Choose a colour with the picker or enter a six-digit hex colour value.
5. Click **Confirm** and wait for the edited image.

Select the wall, enter a sage paint colour, and confirm the finished room.

## What you'll see

The same image is updated with the selected surface recoloured. Inspect adjacent objects, shadows and the boundary of the painted area before accepting the result.

## Example

Try a warm neutral on a detected wall, inspect how it reads beside the floor and furniture, then compare it with your original image. Change one surface at a time when evaluating a palette.

## Troubleshooting

**Change paint is missing.** The selected region may not have been classified as paintable. Inspect another region or use [Edit with prompt](/ai-and-automation/edit-an-image-with-a-prompt.md) for a broader image instruction.

**Confirm is unavailable.** Complete the colour value using six hexadecimal digits, or choose a colour with the picker.

**The highlight is stale after another edit.** Use **Re-segment** to detect regions in the current image.
