# Change an object's material

Change a detected object's material appearance using a sample or reference image.

Select a cloth or solid object with **Segment**, then use **Change Material** to apply a reference appearance.

## When to use it

Use this task to explore a different material on a detected cloth or solid object—for example, an alternative upholstery appearance. To substitute the object itself, use [Replace Element](/ai-and-automation/replace-an-object-from-a-reference.md).

Keep a separate original for comparison; the edit updates the image and leaves placed assets in the drawing unchanged.

Choosing a built-in sample, where offered, starts the edit immediately and can use AI credits. Upload your own reference if you want to inspect its preview before pressing Apply.

## Steps

1. Select one image, click **Segment**, and wait for detection.
2. Click the intended object and inspect the highlighted region.
3. Choose **Change Material**.
4. Upload or drop a reference image into the popup, then inspect its preview.
5. Click **Apply material** to run the edit.

Select the sofa, upload a green velvet reference, and apply the material.

## What you'll see

The object's appearance changes in the same image. Inspect the material across folds, curved surfaces and edges, along with the surrounding scene.

## Troubleshooting

**Change Material is missing.** Select a cloth or solid object. For a floor, use **Change Flooring**; for a paintable surface, use **Change paint**.

**The result changed more than the material.** Compare the whole image with your original. Press **Cmd/Ctrl+Z** if the change is unsuitable, then check the selection and reference before trying again.
